Stand wall, partition, MFC panel: one component, several trades

Depending on who is speaking, the same surface is a stand wall, an exhibition wall, a partition, an MFC panel or a honeycomb panel. That is not pedantry — each term comes from a different trade: the stand contractor, the shopfitter, the joiner, the buyer.

Technically, the demountable stand wall is almost always the same thing: a honeycomb panel. A perimeter frame of finger-jointed timber, a honeycomb core that holds the thickness without adding weight, and two bonded skins — usually melamine-faced (MFC), sometimes lacquered MDF.

A word of warning, because online searches lose a lot of people here: in English honeycomb panel also means aluminium honeycomb composite for facades and aerospace — a different product from a different industry. If you want an exhibition wall, the terms that get you to the right place are stand wall or MFC exhibition panel.

The reason the industry uses a honeycomb panel rather than a solid board is weight. A solid MDF board three metres tall needs two people and a trolley; the same area as a honeycomb panel is lifted and stood by one. On an overnight build-up with several trades in the same hall, that is exactly the difference between finishing and not finishing.

What gets decided before you order

Height. It governs everything else. Up to 3,000 mm is routine. Above that, stability no longer comes from the panel but from the connection system and the corner returns — a 5-metre wall with no return is not a wall, it is a sail. We manufacture up to 6,000 mm in one piece, which removes the horizontal joint at mid-height that shows in every photograph.

Thickness. 40 mm covers the ordinary partition. 50 mm earns its place when the wall carries something — a screen, a bracket, a loaded shelf — or when the height goes past 4 metres. For genuine hung loads there is a reinforced version: better specified in advance than discovered when the fixing has nothing to bite into.

Finish. White melamine remains the trade's baseline: neutral, repairable, and it does not date from one season to the next. When the colour is part of the design, the RAL-lacquered panel arrives already sprayed from our own finishing shop — which avoids painting in the hall, the one build-up operation that never forgives a late slot.

Fire classification. Position by position, not stand by stand — and in the UK the requirement needs reading twice, because exhibitor manuals often still ask for legacy Class 1 wording while the regulations have moved to Euroclass. The whole picture is here. It is the line item that gets most expensive when it is left late.

Cut-outs and services. Doors, vision panels, cable runs, recesses for screens: all done in manufacture, cleanly, at a fraction of what the same operation costs with a circular saw on the stand. The electrical panel is prepared so cable runs inside the thickness, with no surface trunking.

Buying direct from the manufacturer

Stock in the Netherlands. Besides the factory in Italy we hold thousands of raw honeycomb panels in standard sizes at our warehouse in Waalwijk (NL): about 95 km from the Hook of Holland–Harwich ferry, 100 km from Amsterdam RAI, 90 km from Antwerp. No production lead time, just loading and the drive; collection is also possible. See stand panels in stock in the Netherlands.

We manufacture in Fontanelle, province of Treviso, and ship direct — there is no distributor between our workshop and your build-up. Our customers are stand contractors, shopfitters, joiners and design studios, not end clients: we do not approach your customer and we do not appear on your stand.

In practice that means no minimum order, single pieces included, and no surcharge for non-standard sizes — an intermediate size is charged at the price of the next standard size up. Our price list is published, so you can cost a job before you write to us, and a written quote normally comes back within 24 working hours.

On freight there is one real difference between the two markets, and it is worth knowing before you plan a build-up: Ireland is in the EU, Great Britain is not. What that changes in practice is set out here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a stand wall and a honeycomb panel?

In practice none: the demountable stand wall is almost always a honeycomb panel — finger-jointed timber perimeter frame, honeycomb core, melamine-faced or lacquered skins. „Stand wall" is the contractor's word, „honeycomb panel" the manufacturer's.

Is a honeycomb panel the same as aluminium honeycomb?

No, and this is a common mix-up in English. Aluminium honeycomb composite is a facade and aerospace product. Our panels are timber-framed with a honeycomb core and melamine or lacquered wood skins, made for exhibition and interior work.

What does MFC mean?

Melamine-faced chipboard — the standard trade term in the UK for a board with a melamine decorative surface. It is the usual skin on our standard panel, and the reason white MFC remains the baseline finish for stand walls: neutral, repairable and consistent between batches.

What is the maximum height for a stand wall?

Up to 6,000 mm in one piece, which removes the horizontal joint at mid-height. Above 3,000 mm plan for corner returns: stability comes from the connection system rather than the panel alone.

Will your panels fit an existing aluminium system?

We manufacture to the drawing, including as infill within an existing grid. Send us the internal profile dimensions and the rebate depth and we will make the panels to that size.

Do you supply to stand contractors only, or to exhibitors directly?

Our customers are stand contractors, shopfitters, joiners and design studios. We are the panel manufacturer — we do not design or build stands, we do not approach your client and we do not appear on your stand.

A stand to cost?

Send us the drawing, the heights and the quantities: you get a written quote, normally within 24 working hours, in English, German, French or Italian.
