Why exhibitions need their own panel

An exhibition build asks two things of a panel that a trade-fair stand does not. The first is a continuous, faultless surface: in a gallery the wall is lit at a grazing angle, and raking light shows every ripple, every joint that did not close, every bow. The second is fixing capacity: a hung work is not a graphic and has to be held with a margin.

The exhibition panel PAL is made for that: a surface for graphics, prints and art applications, on a structure that takes hanging.

It is worth staying with the raking light, because that is where a badly built honeycomb panel is spotted instantly in a gallery and never spotted at a trade fair: the edge venting we put on every panel lets the gases escape during pressing, which is why our surfaces do not bow.

How the panel is built

Every panel that leaves our plant in Fontanelle, near Treviso, is built the same way. These construction details are what decide whether a honeycomb panel lasts one season or ten.

Finger-jointed spruce frame

Knot-free and made only from full-length battens. Knots are where a frame breaks and pieced battens open up over time, so we don't use either.

Perforated honeycomb core

High grammage, perforated: it transfers load between the two skins and keeps the panel flat after dozens of build-up and dismantle cycles.

Edge venting

On every single panel. It lets gases escape during pressing and cooling — without venting the panel bows, and you only find out at the show.

Class 1 adhesive

white wood adhesive, together with sanded skins. That is the only way the bond is even across the whole surface, with no dead zones that give way in transit.

Hanging works: what to specify when you order

Where the works or the hung elements carry real weight, the answer is no longer more thickness but internal reinforcement at the fixing points — which is exactly what the reinforced panel PZL provides, and the two families can be combined in the same wall.

What we need at order stage is where the fixings sit and at what spacing. Reinforcement put in during production costs a fraction of what it costs to fix on a standing wall, where the only options left are opening the panel up or moving the work.

For museums and exhibitions we also supply fire-rated and RAL-lacquered versions: in museum work a continuous white is the most common requirement, and having our own paint shop is what guarantees the same shade across every wall and on later additions.

Availability, special sizes and delivery

Standard sizes are always in stock. We normally ship within 7 days of order confirmation and in practice almost always sooner: in exhibition work the enquiry arrives from one day to the next, and we are set up for that.

For deliveries outside Italy we agree the build-up slot, the customs paperwork where it applies and the transport documents with you in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from the standard panel?

In what it is for: the PAL is made for continuous exhibition surfaces, where raking light and hung works are the norm. Construction and accessories are compatible with all the other families.

Will it take the weight of a framed work?

Yes, but for anything substantial the fixings have to be planned with internal reinforcement: tell us where the hanging points are when you order.

Can it be supplied lacquered in museum white?

Yes, in any RAL colour, gloss or matt, sprayed in-house. In museum work that is the most requested finish.
